Matthew 21:28 ....Son, go work today in my vineyard.

Most of us have heard the call of the Father at times to work in my vineyard today. It is certain that God still speaks to us. He has spoken to us in His Word. Here in His Word are His Precepts, Promises, Statutes, and Testimonies. He that hath an ear to hear, let him hear.
But besides this there is a counseling more closely and personally addressed to the conscience or heart of the Born Again child of God; sometimes as gentle as a whisper, sometimes as loud as the thunder of Mt. Sinai.

Job 33:14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
Job 33:15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
Job 33:16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction.

In I Samuel chapter 3, God called Samuel from his sleep when Samuel was a child. God called, "Samuel, Samuel" until he answered. God called Matthew, "Follow Me." The Lord got Saul's attention on the road to Damascus and said, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?"
And so has He called to some of us clear and irresistably, "Son, give me your heart", and we have given our hearts.
Since then you who know the Lord have also heard the call of His Spirit to seek His face in prayer, and have felt the presence of One whose force you could not see. Many of you have heard Him say, "Behold, I have made thee a chosen vessel to bear My name unto the Gentiles", and you have felt the stirring to obey it.
Some today have heard it but yet would not hear and have forgotten, and that brings us back to the call today: Son, go work today in my vineyard.

I want to look at 4 things:
1. The character under which we are called - Son.
2. The service to which we are called - To work.
3. The time we are called - today.
4. The place we are called - In My vineyard.

1. Called as a Son, not as a slave.

The prayer of the prodigal son to be made a hired servant was not answered, but his father said, "This my son was dead and is alive again."
God has placed your work on a very gracious footing. You have been called not as a servant who works for wages, but as a son who desires his Father's favor.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Ro 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Ro 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Ro 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.

Here is something you can think about: John 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

We could go on; 2 Corinthians 6:18 and Galatians 3:26, but you see what I mean. We are called to work in a vineyard that we have been given a part of: Called on very gracious footing.

Don't try to serve God in order to be saved.  Serve Him because you are saved.

I used to go berry picking with my Dad, not because I liked it. I didn't like it, but I did it because my Dad wanted me to go with him.
Work for the Kingdom because you are an heir to that Kingdom by the great love of Jesus that enabled you to be called a son of God.

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Ro 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

The work of a son differs much from that of a servant or a hireling. David watched his father's sheep.
If we are heirs of God, how large is our inheritance? A joint heir with Jesus.

Hebrews 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son.

We are called as sons. Will we not do His bidding?

2. The Work.

He didn't say go think, speculate, attend conference after conference the year round, and live in a perpetual maze of religious opinion. He said, "Go work today." Deliver the baby convert. Have a good word to the tiniest child in Sunday School.

He never said, "Go judge or go criticize, but Go Work." Do what He has bidden you. He may call one to offer a sermon, one to offer a prayer, one to offer encouragement. There is work in the shop, at school, at home, in the market place, etc.
Jesus is going to supply the strength it takes to do the job, but He is expecting you and I to work in the vineyard.

3. When - Today.

Just do what the Lord has asked of you today. Jesus said to take no thought for tomorrow. The Lord has said, "Today is the day of salvation." Work today for the night cometh when no man can work. There is coming a time when the tares and the wheat will not be mixed. The chaff and the wheat will not always lay on the threshing room floor together. Don't put God off until later. Later might not come.
Jesus asked the disciples one day, "Could you not tarry 1 hour?

What has Jesus asked of you today?

4. The Place - My Vineyard.

1 Corinthians 10:26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

Mark 16:15 ...Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Go ye to broken homes... Go ye to the widow ... Go ye to the supermarket ... Go ye to the school ... Go ye to the work place, etc.

The Lord spoke of 2 sons here. One forward in profession, yet utterly lacking in being faithful and obedient.
The other sullen and rebellious at first, but repentant in spirit and diligent in labor.

Where do we stand? Which son are we? Have we promised God things and then been unfaithful?
Today let's hear the call and answer as Samuel did. Today let's go as a son would go and work in our Father's vineyard.
