Our text is in Exodus 12:13.
When I see the blood I will pass over you.
Many times when we read this we overlook the fact that God is not sending a destroying angel to Egypt, but that God himself is going to come and execute judgment.
In verse 12 the Lord said, "For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night and will smite all the first born in the land of Egypt and against all the gods of Egypt both man and beast I will execute judgment, I am the Lord.
Now look at verse 29.
Try and imagine, if you can, God, Jehovah, the Almighty God, if he were coming to walk the streets of your city with the sword of judgment in his hand, and suppose his message said, "This night." Would fear grip your heart? Would you think of the things you didn't have ready for his visit?
His message said, "Judgment will fall on all; man and beast." But he has declared also his mercy. A place of safety, of deliverance for those who will obey. That place is under the blood! But Israel is responsible for applying the blood.
Verse 13. When I see the blood, I will pass over you.
As the enemies of the Lord were rent with destruction, God's children were protected. But they were only protected because the mark of the blood was on them.
In Luke 22:20 Jesus said, "This cup is the new testament in my blood which is shed for you."
As we think today about the innocent Lamb that was slain, the Lamb without blemish, let us turn our eyes to the cross. When Jesus the one who knew no sin was numbered with the transgressors, the innocent one was given to suffer and die for our sin, for our safety, our protection in the day of judgment.
Take a look at the cross and see the hands that have always been filled with blessings for the poor, the sin ridden, the lost, now nailed to the tree of the cursed. See the face that was marred more than any man's; the back that was beaten for our healing.
My friend, you may say, "Dave, that is violent. That is not pleasant to hear."
No it is not, and it was not! But we need to see, to get a picture of what was given for our salvation. The suffering that was endured in our place, because it is that blood that flowed that is the redeeming power for you and me.
All who have not applied that blood when the Almighty God returns with a sword in his hand will be destroyed.
What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
If some foolish Israelite had despised God's command, had waited too long, or been too careless and said, "I will sprinkle something else on the door post, or I will adorn it with jewels and gold and silver", he and his household would have surely suffered the judgment.
Other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid; Jesus Christ. There is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved.
My works, my prayers, my tears, cannot save me. The blood alone has power to redeem.
Sacraments, however well they may be attended to cannot save.
Partaking of communion alone cannot save you.
Now I don't want you to get the wrong idea. God forbid that I say anything against these things. They should not be left undone, but they alone without the personal applying of the blood are not enough. No matter how right the ordinance or how true the form or how spiritual the practice, it is all vanity unless you have first come to the blood of Jesus. God is jealous of the blood of Jesus. Don't try to replace it with something else.
Let's look back at the Scripture, chapter 12 verse 29.
And it came to pass that at midnight the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt from the firstborn of Pharoah that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the cattle.
Friend, where there was not the blood applied there was judgment.
IT CAME TO PASS!
From the king to the slave, God wasn't looking for gold or diamonds. He wasn't looking for a big church or a little one. He wasn't looking for the great or the humble, the educated, or the uneducated.
He was looking for one thing. He said, "When I see the blood I will pass over you." Only the blood. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.
There is a fountain filled with blood flows from Emmanuel's veins and sinners plunged beneath the flood lose all their guilty stains.
Calvary is pertetually before the eyes of God in a risen Savior.
I John 1:7. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Revelation 1:5. And from Jesus Christ who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead. And the Prince of the kings of the earth unto Him that loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood and hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever Amen.
Hebrews 9:14. Neither by the blood of goats and calves but by His own blood He entered in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Ephesians 1:7. In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace.
I Peter 1:18-19. For as much as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your Fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ as a Lamb without blemish and without spot.
The Lord of Glory is about to return again in all His glory. The Bible tells us in Thessalonians 4:16 that the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout.
Are you ready if it is today? Have you applied the blood?
I am not asking you if you have come to some form of religion or some type of emotional experience or some denomination, but have you come to the blood of Jesus? Have you accepted His redemption?
I promise it will come to pass!
II Peter 3:10. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night in the which, the heavens shall pass away with a great noise and the elements shall melt with fervent heat. The earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
Are you ready? Are you washed in the blood?
Neither heaven or hell are far away places. You can be in either in a moment. They are just a heart beat away.
