1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
Let These Come and Save Thee - Diviners, Witchcraft & Horoscopes
Isaiah 47:13-14 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels (Strongs Hebrew 6098 = Advice). LET NOW the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, STAND UP AND SAVE THEE from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
I want to ask you today, are you wearied from a multitude of counsel?
Are you seeking toward God or toward wickedness?
I know that is a hard question to ask, but witchcraft and sorcery, even psychics and those who call upon familiar spirits, diviners, horoscopes, stargazers, among many other things still exist in today’s society. I believe these things are just as present in today's society as they were in the bible days. I believe today we over look a lot, we don’t recognize and consider certain things to be wickedness as what they would have back in the bible days. We quickly adjust to them and commonly say "Oh that’s just the way things are today". I think you can see that in about any generation. My Grand Parents were shocked at the difference in things between their generation and the generation of my parents. My parents generation was shocked at the things that were considered normal in my generation. As my kids grow and I get older I can say the same things. The changes in what is considered normal in society from one generation to the next generation is quickly declining and moral standards is diminishing. Sometimes changes take place over time and we don’t see the gradual decline in moral standards until it is at a dramatic change from what we remember in the past. Regardless of how you look at it in society, these things are still wickedness in Gods eyes. Gods view on these things have not changed.
I have also noticed some people today don’t even believe demons and demonic things exist in today’s world, which is amazing to me, because some of the same people will believe in angels.
Lets see what the bible says, look at this…
2 Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
Lets look more into our enemy Satan
Ezekiel 28: 13-15 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
I want you to notice something he was called a Cherub a cherub is also known as an angel.
Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Angels are real and so is the devil and his demons. Lets read a little more on our enemy. It was because iniquity was found in him that he fell. Lets look at what caused his fall. The Bible says that Satan was created by God as a cherub, He was created as one of God's angelic beings. Some time after his creation and before the creation of mankind Satan rebelled against God and took one third of the angels (now referred to as demons) with him into rebellion.
Isaiah 14:12-14 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Satan looked at his own beauty and became puffed up
Ezekiel 28:16-17 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
Now I don’t want us to be afraid when talking about our enemy, we are not to fear our enemy, though he is fallen to earth with one third of his demons, remember what Jesus said…
Luke 10:18-20 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
We are not to be ignorant of his devises. But we are to try the spirit and see if they be of God or not.
2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Now when I started off I started talking about witchcraft, sorcery, horoscopes and those who called upon familiar spirits. We know if God speaks against them, then we know the spirits influencing these things are not of God.
There are a lot of people today who are trusting in the wrong things. Some trust in using their looks to get what they want, some in money, some place their trust in people only to get let down when they are not who they thought they were, some trust in their fame to get them what they want, and some will turn to wicked things and seek counsel for their lives and their futures such as; witchcraft, fortune tellers, horoscopes. Although placing our trust in anything other than our Lord is wrong, the ones I want to talk about today is a multitude of wicked counsel. Witchcraft, sorcery, diviners and such things. People still look to these things today. People back in the bible days would call for the sorcerers, enchanters magicians and other things that were wicked in Gods eyes. A king in Daniel chapter 2 called for a multitude of them.
Daniel 2:2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
But none were successful in the kings request. He didn’t just ask for the dream interpretation and chance having them lie to him about the interpretation he requested first, before they interpreted the dream to tell him what the dream was. The king said…(9)But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.
And look at their answer in verse 10 –11 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean. And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
Now lets look at another instance where man looked unto other things rather than God. Daniel Chapter 5 remember the writing on the wall. Who could interpret it? Just like in the above there was none out of a multitude who could tell what the writing meant. The King would have blessed them well if any one of them could have interpreted it.
Daniel 5:7-8 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.
When we seek the counsel of these things it is wickedness to God. God does not speak well of these things nor those who practice them in the bible. We are to seek our Lord in our times of need. I realize some may look upon these things as though they are neat, fun or interesting and may say "What’s the harm". I know that this may not be a popular topic to talk on and I may step on some toes today, but I am not looking to win a popularity contest, but to proclaim the truth, so that in knowing the truth we can turn away from these things and turn to our God. I have included a lot of scripture on this topic so you can read them for yourself.
John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Lets take a moment and look a little more at what the bible has to say about some of these things.
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
That’s a pretty big statement there! Lets look at a few more and see what Gods view of these things are.
Deuteronomy 18:10-13 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or awizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.
1 Corinthians 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
1 Chronicles 10:13-14 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; And enquired not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.
Here is the story of Saul and the woman with the familiar spirit.
1 Samuel 28:6-25
6 And when Saul enquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.
8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
9 And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
10 And Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.
12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.
13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
14 And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
16 Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
17 And the Lord hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the Lord hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:
18 Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the Lord done this thing unto thee this day.
19 Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the Lord also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
20 Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.
21 And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me.
22 Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.
23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.
24 And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof:
25 And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
Did you know it is possible to weary the Lord?
Malachi 2:17 Ye have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
Malachi 3:17 Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?
Who are you proclaiming your trust to be in?
Who are you delighting in and turning to for counsel?
If our words can weary our Lord, how about our actions?
Acts 13:22 (Look what the Lord had to say about David) And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.
I want to be seen as David was, a man after Gods own heart. I don’t want to loose out like Saul did, I don’t want the choices I have made through life to be my downfall. I want to be more like David, one who shall fulfil all his (Gods) will.
In the above scripture that we read in Deuteronomy 18 we read this… For all that do these things (make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, uses divination, an observer of times, an enchanter, a witch, a charmer, a consulter with familiar spirits, a wizard, or a necromancer) are an abomination unto the Lord.
WOW think about that….that is a pretty big statement from our God. And as we read in the story of Saul, he lost out because he called upon those who used these things.
Now if you are caught up in these things, I don’t want you to panic, the word abomination scares a lot of people, but remember Gods mercy is great, and his ability to forgive is unmeasureable, and as we read earlier knowing the truth can make you free.
Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Even Christians can be deceived and drawn into these snares of the devil, especially when we don’t know what the Word says about these things.
There is no shame in being the man who has sin in his life, if when that man learns of his sin, through the Spirit of Truth, will repent and turn from his sin and turn toward the Lord and seek the counsel of God.
That is part of our growing and maturing process as a Christian.
Matthew 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
From the newest of babes to the wisest of mature Christians, we should all still be learning, growing and continuing in the faith and the knowledge of God and making adjustments in our live according to our knowledge throughout our entire Christian walk. Some may already know Gods Word on these things; where others are just now learning them.
As we read, we learn. As we learn the truth, we adjust our lives to get in line with what the word of God says. And as we do this, the more our Lord (through the Spirit) will reveal new things to us concerning the things of God. It is important that we walk in what we know so we will grow in our Christian walk. The shame only lies in the man who when he knows the truth, and can see his sin, yet still chooses to remain in that sin and refuses to repent and turn from it.
Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
Remember our opening text… .LET NOW the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, STAND UP AND SAVE THEE from these things that shall come upon thee.
None of these are able to save us, and to some people the devil may use these things to peak their interest with yet they will bring no good thing to us. These things are wickedness in Gods eyes. But there is one that is good. There is one that can save, that can heal, that can comfort and mend even the broken hearted and give counsel in our time of need. His name is Jesus.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Isaiah 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
If you need counsel seek it from our Lord Jesus Christ. He can tell you what a whole multitude of these diviners (the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, sorcerers, witches, psychics and those with familiar spirits) couldn’t, and best of all Jesus will lead you away from harm and into a place of great blessings that the others wouldn’t.
