I want to talk about fire: Especially the Holy Ghost and fire.
Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.
Luke 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.
Mark 9:49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
Fire has a purifying effect. In the Old Testament they had laws about purifying, such as:
Numbers 31:22 Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
Nu 31:23 Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.
In the Old Testament the offerings & sacrifices were made by fire. In the New Testament we are baptized with the Holy Ghost & fire.
The Holy Ghost is our Purifyer. He will help us take out anything unclean from our lives.
Our offerings & sacrifices are our praise & worship. We worship the Lord in Spirit & Truth.
God is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.
Deuteronomy 4:24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
On the day of Pentecost the ones in the upper room actually saw the fire of the Holy Ghost sit upon each other. What an awesome sight that would have been.
Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Jesus said in Acts 1:8, But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
The Holy Ghost is power: Power to stay a Christian, power to be His witness, power to do the works that Jesus did.
Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. (Also Psalm 104:4)
Ministers: Strong's Concordance: 1. a public minister, a servant of the state 2. a minister, servant a. so
of military labourers b. of the temple 1. of one busied with holy things 2. of a priest c. of the servants of
I believe that is you and me. We are ministers of the Lord in His army. He said we are kings and priests.
Sometimes we can become weary like Jeremiah, but we must keep on doing the Lord's work.
Jeremiah was discouraged and tired of being persecuted, mocked, and ridiculed so he said he would not speak in the name of the Lord anymore, but God's Word was like a fire shut up in his bones and he had to speak. God's Word should burn inside us until we can't help but tell of how great our God is.
Jeremiah 20:7 O LORD, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me.
Jer 20:8 For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily.
Jer 20:9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
Jeremiah 23:29 Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock
Our fire should never go out.
Leviticus 6:12 And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings.
Le 6:13 The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.
We must keep refueling ourselves with God's Word, prayer, and praise. God (The Holy Spirit), inhabits our praise. If we want to keep burning get closer to the fire.
Our light should never go out.
Leviticus 24:2 Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.
We should let our light shine continually. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Romans 12:11 tells us to be fervent in Spirit. The American College Dictionary meaning of fervent is: Hot, burning, glowing, or boiling.
Acts 18:25 This man (Apollos) was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.
We should also be fervent in prayer.
James 5:16 The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
We should be fervent in love.
1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.
1 Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity (love) among yourselves.
1 Corinthians 3:12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; I believe that the foundation is Jesus Christ and that gold, silver and precious stones are the things of God and that wood, hay and stubble are things of the world.
1co 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
I believe this is talking about the day of the Lord's return. Peter said that the elements will melt with a fervent heat. Only the things of God will stand in that day. We need that Holy Ghost and fire to help us keep on the right track with Jesus.
