Division and discord can stop the flow of the Spirit in our lives. Jesus told about this in the
Paul said in James 3:16, For where envying (jealousy) and strife (discord) is, there is confusion and every evil work.
Matthew 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
Mt 12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
Mark 3:24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
Mr 3:25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
Luke 11:17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.
Lu 11:18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?
The disciples had some strife (discord) about who was the greatest.
Luke 22:24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. Jesus told them in verse 26, But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest (oldest)among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief (in authority), as he that doth serve (a servant).
Every kingdom, city, house, family, church, etc. that is divided (split into factions) is doomed to fall. But when we get in one mind and one accord mighty things happen.
1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions (strife) among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
On the day of Pentecost 120 people were of one mind and one accord and things began to happen. The Holy Spirit from on high came down and filled them all.
Paul said some people were carnal because there were divisions and strife among them. They had lost their spiritual effectiveness.
1 Corinthians 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
Division and discord (strife) are an abomination to God.
Proverbs 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
Pr 6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
Pr 6:18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
Pr 6:19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord (strife) among brethren.
The Lord hates discord (strife).Jesus taught several times on division.
Matthew 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
Mt 18:16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
Mt 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican.
If your brother repents of the wrong done unto you, forgive him. Repentance and forgiveness will ward off division and discord.
Luke 17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke (reprimand) him; and if he repent, forgive him.
Lu 17:4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
The Bible says to watch people who cause division and offense that is against doctrine and avoid them.
Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark (watch) them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
1 Corinthians 5:9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
1co 5:10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
1co 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
1co 5:12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? 1co 5:13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that
2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2ti 3:2 For men shall belovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2ti 3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
2ti 3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2ti 3:6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
2ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
2ti 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
2ti 3:9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
2 Thessalonians 3:6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
2th 3:7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly
2th 3:8 Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
2th 3:9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.
2th 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
2th 3:11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
2th 3:12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
2th 3:13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
2th 3:14 Andif any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
2th 3:15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish (warn) him as a brother.
Titus 3:9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
Tit 3:10 A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition (warning) reject;
Tit 3:11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
Heretic: A professed believer who maintains religious opinions contrary to those accepted by his church or rejects doctrine prescribed by his church.
1 Timothy 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
1ti 6:4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
1ti 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. (shun - flee from)
2 John 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
2jo 1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a
2jo 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
2jo 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
2jo 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
We are to warn and rebuke (correct) those that sin so that others may fear and not do as they do. But we are not to socialize with them.
1 Timothy 5:19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
1ti 5:20 Them that sin rebuke (correct) before all, that others also may fear.
Proverbs 24:24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:
Pr 24:25 But to them that rebuke (correct) him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.
We are to proclaim the Word whenever the opportunity comes, and show people the right way to live.
2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
This is how it would read from the Strong's meanings of these words.
Verse 2: Proclaim openly the Word; be ready when the opportunity seems favorable or unfavorable; correct, reprimand, encourage with all patience and instruction.
Verse 3: For the time will come when they will not sustain sound teaching; but after their own desires shall they accumulate teachers, having ears itching for something pleasant;
Verse 4: And they shall turn back from the Truth, and shall be turned unto falsehood.
Paul called strife (discord) a work of the flesh. If we walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lusts (desires) of the flesh.
Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Ga 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Ga 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Romans 13:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
Ro 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
The way to combat division and discord is by maintaining the fruit of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Ga 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
2 Timothy 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.....
2ti 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
Notice this says we must purge ourselves. We must keep our vessel clean.
2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2pe 1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
2pe 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
2pe 1:7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
2pe 1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2pe 1:9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
2pe 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.
