Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
It seems very odd to me that after all that God has brought these people through, after the way that Jericho fell, that Joshua would have to set such a choice before them. You would think that after all Israel had been through and all God had done for them that the decision would have been made.
But this is a new generation and they must choose for themselves.
Joshua says, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." The old Bob Dylan song says, "You're Gonna Serve Somebody", and that is true.
Alot of people today are serving the demands of society. They choose to fit in rather than be called out.
The Word of God declares in 2 Corinthians 6:17, Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
Alternatives are always before us – in every area of life – and to choose one is not to choose the other.
It is not enough to know what's right. Right has power only as it is done. Principles are of little value unless we are prepared to live by them.
Joshua says choose, choose this day and choose whom.
If Isreal was to be a Nation that served The One True God it would have to be formed of families and homes that served The One True God.
Listen to me, A Christian nation can't be formed without Christian homes, Christian families, teaching their children Christian values.
Joshua steps up. Joshua says, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
Joshua made a choice as to how he would lead his family. He lead by his actions. He made a decision that, first of all, he himself would serve the Lord. He would lead by demonstration.
Thank God for men who will step up and make a choice for the Lord.
In Matthew chapter 7, Jesus teaches about two men who built houses, let's call them homes. One built on the rock, one built on the sand.
One home was a fortress. One was a facade( a false, superficial, or artificial appearance or effect).
You see, we have many people today that don't reject God, they want His blessings, they want His healing, they want His protection, but they want the world and the pleasures of sin too. They want to fit into society, blend in, if you will.
Please listen to me right now, even if what I am about to say upsets you. We are living in a day when adultery and preversion and entertainment have not only found their way into the church, they are on the platform and in the pulpit. Thats not a fortress that's a facade. The church is called to be a fortress that the gates of hell cannot prevail against.
You see, here is the thing, if you are caught up in these kinds of sin, I love you and you are welcome here, but it is the church's job to tell you the truth and get you delivered, not overlook your condition, in order to keep your membership.
James chapter 1 verse 6-8 tells us that the double minded will recieve nothing from God.
Joshua was telling these people you must make a decision.
Much of what is called Christianity today is a facade built to satisfy society. It lacks true comitment, because it lacks the true relationship with God.
I want to tell you something, when you walk in a personal relationalship with the Lord and you bring yourself before him everyday, it will change the way you live. You will think twice about your actions when you know that you are going to be talking to the Lord about them in a little while.
Joshua said, "If it seem evil to you to serve the Lord." One translation of this verse said (Unjust, unreasonable or inconvenient). If you think it is unjust, unreasonable or inconvenient to serve the Lord, then choose whom you will serve.
You see I don't think that most of the people that are out of church are neglecting their salvation because they think serving God is evil, but because they think it is just inconvenient. If they think a hour and a half in church worshiping the one who died in their place is inconvevient, they really won't like an eternity of hell.
Joshua said choose and choose now today.
See, I don't know what kind of church society will build, but I know what kind of church God wants to build. I know what kind of church he is going to have.
A Church that will stand against whatever barrier or gates hell tries to throw up (Matt. 16:18)
A Church that no weapon formed aginist will prosper(Isa.54:17)
A Church that is shining in the light of his glory (Isa.60:1)
A Church where God will arise and his enemies will be scattered(Psalm 68:1)
A Church that is a Fortress not a Facade.
Listen to me, the Church Of Jesus is not going to be defeated or swallowed up by the demands of society. I don't care what things look like right now. I will tell you it didn't look good when He hung on the cross and died. To the worldly eyes it looked like He lost, but the greatest victory of all was being won.
God is going to have the Glorious Church He said He would Have. Jesus said I will build my church, but we have a choice to make if we are to be a part of it.
As time goes flying by as the hours and days of our life expire, we have to choose who and what will we use it for. It is up to each of us to choose if we will give God a couple hours a week and then live the rest serving other gods or if we will live our life for Him.
Psalm 100:2-5 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
Let us witness while we still have a chance, work while it is day; while we have a chance. Whatever the Lord has laid on your heart to do, you better do it quickly. The time that is lost is gone so let's redeem what we have left.
Let me close with the words of an old song;
If you walk in the pathway of duty. If you work till the close of the day, you shall see the great king in His beauty, when you’ve gone the last mile of the way.
Yes, when I’ve gone the last mile of the way. I shall rest at the close of the day. And I know that there will be joys that await me, When I’ve gone the last mile of the way.
We can’t afford to be idle. We can’t afford to waste time. We’ve got to work till the close of the day. I want to hear Him say, “Servant, Servant well done.
It time the church became a fortress again where the troubled find hope peace and rest for their souls.
It all starts with a decision, "That as for me and my house we will serve the Lord."
