John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
Joh 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Joh 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Jesus is about to go to the cross and He has taken an opportunity to talk to His disciples. He is about to put His ministry into their hands. He is about to give them keys to power.
Let's read these verses carefully. They are very important.
In those last hours before the cross He spoke to His disciples about supernatural power. He said they could have what they asked for in prayer. He told them they would be able to do even greater things than He had done. He told them how to get that power operating in their lives and keep it operating.
He showed them 3 inseparable elements. One cannot work without the other. Maybe if we take a good look at these we will see why so many Christians today don't seem to be walking in the power that we should be.
Now the first: THE NAME OF JESUS.
Most of us know about using the name of Jesus to defeat the devil. We will talk more about it. But I want to move on.
The second: THE COMMANDMENTS.
He said if you love me keep My Commandments.
Most of us know that Scripture well. But we sort of skip over this part. This is one of the important steps to unlocking the power He has promised.
In other words, if we want the power there are some conditions to be met: Obedience.
He is not going to turn us loose with that might power until we show some discipline. If we don't obey the Commandments, the name is not going to work for us.
If we keep His Commandments miracle-working power is released. If we don't, it won't. The amount of power we walk in is determined by the amount of obedience we walk in.
God is not going to turn you loose with a loaded weapon until you have showed enough discipline to use it in wisdom.
John 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Joh 15:8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
Joh 15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
Joh 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
These are not just a bunch of religious rules. That Word that He is talking about is a living thing. To abide in It means to make your home there. Spend time with It. Fill your mind with It. Fill your mouth with It. Meditate It and let It guide your actions.
In Colossians 3:16 Paul said, Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.
We need to have that Living Word inside to the point that when circumstances arise, God's Word automatically arises in us.
I mean, you're in the middle of a desperate situation wondering what to do. Suddenly a Scripture you heard or read comes from down inside you and you have the answer. That is the Word abiding in you. And the Comforter brings it to your remembrance.
It sounds easy doesn't it?
But you'll have to keep a command He gave us in John 14:27. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
See how important it is to keep His Commands? If we are in panic and fear we can't operate in the way we just talked about.
You may say, "I don't think I can do that." Yes you can. Let the Word abide in you.
So we have:
1. Power in His Name.
2. Obeying His Commandments.
The third: LOVE.
John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
We must love one another.
There are believers that can quote large amounts of Scripture. They walk around speaking the name of Jesus all over the place, but they are rough and insensitive to family and friends. Strife and discontent is their way. They may talk in tongues for 20 minutes, but they are devoid of real spiritual power, because they are lacking love and compassion.
Let's see what Paul said about love for one another.
I Corinthians 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
I co 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
1co 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
You really need to read the whole chapter.
I believe that the name of Jesus, obeying the Commandments, and walking in love will get our spiritual power flowing.
